Every child with a significant reading problem such as dyslexia also
has a spelling problem. However, specific spelling disorder can occur
in children who do not experience a reading problem. People with specific
spelling disorder are usually able to spell phonetically, by making
words “look” the way they “sound.” Although
these children are unable to spell correctly, the mistakes are usually
readable from a communications viewpoint. This type of condition may
be related to certain specific automation capacities of the brain. Identification
of this problem leads to a specific type of remediation.
